It's all about hassle-free voting.

Why is this important? Because early voters get to avoid long lines, broken machines, and problems that disenfranchised hundreds of thousands of Ohioans in 2004. Every early voter reduces the strain on polling places on Election Day, and that means more votes get counted.

Our central strategy revolves around moving voters to the polls. But that doesn't just mean driving vans. It requires smart, target organizing in communities that are too often disenfranchised - African-American communities, immigrant communities, young voters, homeless people, and others.

Each volunteer will join a team that is assigned to a particular area. Each team will be guided by a Team Leader - an organizer from the community who knows the population and understands where and how to communicate with potential voters. Team Leaders will work with their volunteers to generate the best strategies and tactics to turn out early voters.

At least two volunteer organizers will be paired with a Team Leader. However, the Team Leader will recruit additional volunteers from the community to assist your team. You will work with the Team Leader to holistically develop and implement a customized strategy for turning out the vote in your assigned community. The exact tactics will vary from site to site, and your ideas and skills will be more than welcome. You’ll get to know the community, you’ll work hard, and you’ll bring some much-needed capacity to support the local organizer.

The best advice we can give potential organizers is to bring your creativity with you to Ohio. We're nimble enough that a brilliant idea can shoot straight to the top in no time flat, and help us bring many more voters to the polls. Innovative, flexible, strategic - that's what we need from our organizers.

But What Exactly Will Volunteers Do?

If you need a fixed schedule that you plug into every day as a worker bee, then Vote Today Ohio may not be for you. If you are willing to innovate, think on your feet, and take on multiple roles, then Vote Today Ohio is your ticket!

In the course of a day with us, you might:

- Meet with a food pantry director to schedule a pickup
- Give a pitch in a college classroom
- Drive 50 new voters to the polls
- Organize a barbecue
- Sign up homeless people for poll shuttles
- Coordinate with church leaders
- Plaster a campus with posters
- Make outreach calls to new voters
- Dress up in silly costumes to generate buzz
- Dress your van up in silly costumes
- Brainstorm about how to get ballots in the bank!

If you're ready to make a difference, fill out our Volunteer Intake Form.
Cristina Moonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16976855379164535119noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3891754994231250294.post-73794886039129370132008-10-10T12:37:00.001-04:002008-10-31T16:39:41.717-04:00About Vote Today OhioNOW: Phase Two (Oct 22 - Nov 3) - Finishing the Job

On October 22nd, Vote Today Ohio will launch PHASE TWO of this groundbreaking initiative. Given the momentum of our voter mobilization efforts during Golden Week, we want to continue to help Ohioans take advantage of early voting. We want to build on our successes and offer more people rides to the polls - people who typically don't vote, people who wonder if their vote really matters, people who are often too burdened with the daily hardships of real life to stand in long lines on November 4th.

We have a great team and a great plan, but there is much work to do. Be a part of this. Visit our volunteer page and sign up to help make a difference in Ohio. And/or make a donation.

History depends on it.

------------------------

THEN: Grabbing hold of Golden Week (Sept 30 - Oct 6)
(originally posted September 13)

Two years ago, Ohio changed its voting laws in a way that creates an extraordinary opportunity for more voters to participate in the democratic process.

Vote Today Ohio will use this change to lock down thousands of votes before election day -- critical insurance against the kinds of election day problems that affected our past two presidential elections.

For a 7-day "Golden Week," from Sept 30 - Oct 6, Ohio residents can walk into an early voting center, register to vote, and vote on the spot. This has never been possible before. Why does it matter? Because it takes what is normally a two-step process (register, wait a month, THEN vote) and turns it into a one-step process (register AND vote at the same time). For organizers, that creates a much more efficient way to bring new voters into the process AND lock down their votes, before they can be manipulated, stolen or lost.

During this new Golden Week and throughout the Early Voting window, Vote Today Ohio aims to turn out voters from two kinds of locations -- college campuses, and urban gathering spots. The model is simple: teams of organizers will shuttle students / young people from campuses / urban centers to early voting centers. Organizers will use music and a party atmosphere to draw in new voters -- instead of knock and drag, it's rock and drag.

The Plan in Detail

• 20 Teams : Vote Today Ohio will recruit 12 teams of campus organizers and 8 teams of urban organizers (for a total of 80 organizers). Most teams will have 5 members -- two drivers, two street team organizers, one team leader.

• Preparation: In the days leading up to early voting week, teams will plaster their campuses / urban centers with materials about early voting week. Team leaders will generate publicity in school newspapers, radio stations, and via online campus channels, Facebook, etc.

• Logistics: During early voting week, teams will set up vote ferry stations, where students and unlikely voters can get a ride to a polling station in a Vote Today Ohio van. Two drivers will run continuous ferries to and from polling stations.

• Training and GOTV: Each team will be instruct voters on Ohio new voting rights, rules and regulations. Organizers and van drivers will be given talking points and coached on how to recruit voters as Early Vote Volunteers who can then turn out their social networks. Volunteers will also be re-recruited for continuing persuasion and GOTV activities from Oct 6 - Nov 4.

• Non-van GOTV: Any voter who wants to register but can't vote early will have the opportunity to register and sign up for an absentee ballot.

Target Campuses:

• Ohio State University
• Ohio University
• University of Toledo
• University of Cincinnati
• Kent State
• University of Dayton
• Cuyahoga Community College
• Bowling Green State

Target Urban Areas:

• Columbus
• Cleveland
• Cincinnati
• Dayton
• ToledoVote Today Ohiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18052899750991211468noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3891754994231250294.post-89010289844632527122008-10-09T12:25:00.013-04:002008-10-31T16:46:50.721-04:00Look What You Did During Golden WeekMonday was the final day of Golden Week here in Ohio, and we ROCKED IT!

That was the day we banked just over 800 votes (exact tallies to be confirmed).

That was the day we hit our single biggest total.

That was the day when all our advance work and publicity paid off. It shows the cumulative power of our relentless organizers, drivers, team leaders, and supporters. We built a great organization together, and no matter what curveballs came our way, we persevered with our mission.

That perseverance touched people. As corny as it sounds, our work here hasn't just added thousands of voters. It has changed lives. Original volunteers have decided to stay longer to keep driving early voters. New recruits found over the course of our activities have thrown themselves into the cause. One of our team leaders in Cincinnati called on Tuesday to announce "The amazing volunteers here just won't be stopped!"

Deep down, I think he's why all of us do this work -- to make our democracy work for the people that need it most. That's justice.

So, how does it all add up? What do we have to show for our blood, sweat and tears?

During Golden Week, Vote Today Ohio banked ~3300 votes and 621 voter registrations. Did we make a critical contribution in America's #1 battleground state? Absolutely!

Our 3300 votes were far more than just a drop in the bucket. Consider this: In Franklin County (home to Columbus), 9264 people voted early during Golden Week. Vote Today Ohio vans (and cars and marches) moved 1369 of them to the polls. Yes, we directly moved 14.8 percent of the early vote in Franklin County. It's safe to assume that thousands more heard about Golden Week directly from our work. That's powerful. We were THE game in town.

Plus, we broke new ground. We asked ourselves a risky question -- could a hard-working and intrepid group of volunteers actually make good on an untested Golden Week voter mobilization program? Would voters respond? Could we pull it off in just three wee weeks? The answers are a resounding YES. Sure, we learned some tough lessons. But we learned them well, and by the end of the week, we had the kind of smooth, professional operation that any campaign would die for. With some strategic tweaks, our Golden Week program will now become a powerful tool.

Now for an important announcement: Over the next few days, our core team will be processing and analyzing this amazing experiment. We're already planning our next steps. We've built something strong and effective, and are compelled to keep it moving. The Boss movingly implored Ohioans to grab hold of the early voting advantage. With nudging like that, the VTO crew was able to handily sign up dozens of people for rides to the voting center.

<img style="margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinsvj_p9bpDqYFnP-viDzEtIRnXsTI54Z0QNr6xVBk9Hba0L8lcwKjKauHrQFvE2Ca1UTYLWpVbcSWaN9nhahmjgSuu62O7zWABG-QXicS-dad1r_nOSxxW6HPb9I9wniBS7Qu_M72wrk/s400/2915268061_6633a29f39.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5254017383414857186" />

Energetic Vote Today Ohio teams have been moving University of Cincinnati students and staff to early voting centers all week. A voter can vote early whether or not they have already registered until October 6 (the registration deadline).

If you requested an absentee ballot you should not go to an early voting center. Instead, wait for the requested absentee ballot to arrive by mail, fill it out, and return it. If you have already received your absentee ballot you can fill it out and bring it in person to the Board of Elections or mail it.

Early and Absentee Voting Identification Requirements
Several forms of identification are accepted to vote early or by absentee ballot. Most voters will use either:

The last four digits of your social security number or your Ohio driver’s license number.
You can also use:

A copy of a current and valid photo identification (i.e. Ohio Driver License, State ID card, Government ID). Photo Identification must show name and address; or

A copy of a current utility bill (including a cell phone bill), bank statement, paycheck, government check, or other government document that shows the voter’s name and current address (including from a public university).

Election Day ID Requirements
November 4 Election Day requirements are different than early or absentee voting. On Election Day, a voter must show their current and valid photo identification or a copy of a utility bill, etc. They will not be allowed to vote on Election Day using only the last four digits of their social security number or their driver’s license number. It is much easier to vote early.

College Student Registration
A student can register and vote from their Ohio school address. If they vote from their school address though they may not vote at their previous address (i.e. their parents’ address). If they are not voting early they should get a utility bill or bank statement with their name and current address to make sure they have proper identification for Election Day (see Election Day id requirements above).

Homeless Persons Registration
Homeless people can register at a shelter or wherever they receive mail and will vote in the precinct where they receive mail. Since voting on Election Day requires identification that many homeless people do not have, they should be encouraged to vote early before the registration deadline of October 6th. This way they can register and vote all at the same time.

Ex-Felon Registration
Many ex-felons think they can’t vote, but a convicted felon can register and vote in Ohio if they are on probation, parole, or after completing their sentence. They cannot register or vote if they are currently in prison for a felony. A person twice convicted of violating elections laws cannot vote in Ohio.

What to Expect At the Polls
Ohio law bars political electioneering within 100 feet of a polling place. Although it is unclear if Ohio electioneering law applies to early vote centers, to be safe Vote Today Ohio volunteers will not engage in any electioneering near an early voting center. We will bring voters to an early vote center, but we will not accompany them inside the building. We will not assist voters in filling out their absentee ballot. If needed, voters can request a democratic and republican observer to assist them inside the polling station. They can also request that a family member or other person assist them (our volunteers will decline to take on this role if asked).nealbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09872140168988438844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3891754994231250294.post-71113965274508674972008-09-23T17:29:00.007-04:002008-10-24T14:59:39.957-04:00Help Make History - Volunteer in Ohio! From mid-October through Election Day, Vote Today Ohio needs about 40 more volunteers to join our strategic, nimble teams throughout the state.

Early voter shuttles relaunch in three Ohio cities

October 23, 2008, Columbus – Vote Today Ohio (VTO) relaunched its successful early voter mobilization shuttle program yesterday in Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati.

From mid-October through Election Day, VTO intends to help thousands of Ohioans get to Early Vote Centers so they can cast their ballots safely and easily.

The decision to relaunch came on the heels of the successful VTO Golden Week program. From September 30 to October 6, VTO transported 3300 otherwise unlikely voters to Early Voting Centers in six targeted counties – a number that translates to 13% of all early voters and 32% of the voters who registered and voted at the same time during that period.

The VTO program is designed to help voters avoid a repeat of the notorious long lines, broken machines, and GOP intimidation faced by hundreds of thousands of disenfranchised Ohioans in 2004.

VTO volunteers in Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati will be continuing the promotion of early voting as a way for underrepresented Ohioans to ensure their voices get heard. Voters now have a toll free number – 866.748.8867 – to call for one of the free VTO shuttles.

Vote Today Ohio is a grassroots PAC (political action committee) committed to enhancing democracy by encouraging more Ohioans to vote, especially those too often failed by the democratic process.
Dubbed 'Golden Week' by Vote Today Ohio and other electoral awareness groups, the early voting period is the first time in a presidential election that voters in Ohio can register and vote at the same time – and early. Initial indications are that they are seizing the opportunity.

Beginning this morning, voting centers across the state opened their doors to welcome any Ohioan wishing to cast a ballot in advance of November 4th. So far, indications are that the process could not be easier.

“I've been hearing all day from the volunteers we have deployed across the state – the response they're getting from voters is overwhelmingly positive,” says Amy Little, Field Director for the inaugural VTO initiative.

Stephen Hightower, a Columbus-based VTO volunteer coordinator and community activist, is not surprised by the positive response of the early voting scheme: “It's easy and it's quick. People are really digging the idea of getting their vote out of the way now instead of contending with the line-ups and potential hassles of November 4th.”

After such a successful first day, VTO organizers are confident that the instant popularity of early voting will carry through the rest of this week.

Vote Today Ohio (VTO) is one of several outreach initiatives working to increase awareness among Ohio voters about early voting, and the only operation focused exclusively on voter mobilization.

- 30 -

What do volunteers do?
A: You can check out how our program works here.

Q: I'm all pumped up and ready to kick butt in Ohio! But I have some questions before I commit. Who do I call?
A: We’re so excited for your help. We’ve got a lot of phone calls and emails to return from enthusiastic supporters. Please read info on this web site thoroughly and contact us at votetodayohio@gmail.com with follow up questions. We’ll get back to you soon as we can.

Q: I want to come but I can’t afford the plane ticket. Can you help?
We are relying on out-of-state volunteers to raise their own funds from friends, family, and networks to cover personal expenses. Why not ask your friends and family to chip in to support your travel costs and issue a request to everyone you know to donate frequent flier miles.

Q: I’m coming from somewhere within driving distance. Can I carpool with someone coming from my city or along the way?
A: We’ll try to hook you up with a carpool. Contact us at votetodayohio@gmail.com with “I need a carpool from x city” in the subject line. You can also try to find one on Craigslist or other rideshare services. Or consider Greyhound if you’ve got a few bucks for a bus ticket.

Q: What if I’m only available for a weekend or my schedule doesn’t work with your program?
A: Our program model depends on reliable, consistent, skilled volunteers to develop and implement the work in each community. If you're able to join us for a specific 4-7 day Action Block, we'll be able to provide you with the training and tools to take a leadership role, and we'll plug you in as a key member of a team in Cleveland, Cincinnati, or Columbus.

But if you can only give a day or two, we can ABSOLUTELY still use your help. If you can come only for a couple of hours, other campaigns will be over the moon to put your talent to use. Find other volunteer opportunities with our partner America Votes.

Q: When will I know where I will be placed?
A: We’ll read everything you wrote in your application, we’ll plan to accommodate your requests, and we’ll firm up with you soon as we can. We’ll triage to get back soonest to people who are arriving for the earlier sessions, and then get to folks coming for the later sessions next.

Q: Where will I sleep?
A: We can help arrange housing for you in supporters’ homes nearby. If you can afford to arrange your own accommodations, deep thanks.

Q: I asked for housing with a supporter for the week. Tell me what to expect. Should I bring my sleeping bag?
A: Most hosts can offer a comfortable couch or a spare bed. We'll put you in touch with your host and tell you the specifics before you get here. Please bring a hardy spirit, gratitude for whatever your host can offer, and plan to bring sleeping bag and pillow just in case. If you are driving, toss extra sheets, blankets, mattress pads or aerobeds in the car. Campaigns never have enough bedding!

Q: This whole thing seems really hard. Do we actually have a plan to get voters to Early Vote Centers?
A: Yep. A lot of plans, in fact. We'll be working with a "portfolio" of tactics that we developed during Golden Week. You’ll help tweak our strategies throughout the week. It'll be hard work, but you WILL actually get people to vote. We guarantee it.

Q: What's up with van insurance?
A: We will be covering liability and collision insurance for our vehicles. Drivers who are insured under their own liability plans may be able to help us save a BUNDLE of money, though, without opening themselves up to any extra risk. If you're assigned as a driver, can you check to see if you've got a liability plan in place already?

Q: Who's paying for gas?
A: Vote Today Ohio will pay for gas for all vehicles that move voters to the polls, including your car if you need it.

Q: And food?
A: Many of our generous hosts have offered to cook for their guests, but they are not at all required to feed you. So we ask that you be self-reliant in your food needs.

Remember -- many of your SPECIFIC questions (who's my Team Leader? where am I staying?) will be answered as we work out placements.

We're incredibly excited to meet you all!Vote Today Ohiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18052899750991211468noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3891754994231250294.post-45038218714051803702008-09-12T17:46:00.001-04:002008-10-23T17:58:04.481-04:00VTO in the News and OnlineVTO IN THE NEWS

Voting for gold in Ohio
valleyadvocate.com
16-10-08

Early voting a growing trend in the US
abcnews.com
14-10-08

Obama, McCain Push Backers to Make Use of New Early-Voting Laws
news.yahoo.com
09-10-08

Obama, McCain push supporters to visit polls early
09-10-08

Ohio homeless driven to polls to vote Obama
foxnews.com
07-10-08

Homeless 'driven' to vote Obama
nypost.com
07-10-08

Come to Ohio! 501(c)3s, and partisanshipVote Today Ohio is a Political Action Committee (PAC), regulated by the Federal Election Commission. That requires us to make the following declaration on all our materials: "not authorized by any candidate or candidate's committee." In plain English, that means we can't share resources, information or strategy with any candidate or political party -- even if we are working towards the same political goal. And so we don't.

We can, however, coordinate with other PACs, 527s, and 501(c)4 and 501(c)3 organizations to achieve our objective of helping to bring voters to the polls. In some cases, that means functioning in a non-partisan manner, simply offering any voter assistance to the polls.

We welcome - and are within our right to pursue - collaboration with initiatives interested in enhancing democracy by encouraging more Ohioans to vote ... especially those all too often failed by the democratic process and system.Vote Todayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17820000155169923389noreply@blogger.com0
